POSITION SPECIFICS

The Research Project Manager oversees and advises on research project operations including study methodologies, protocol development, project deliverables and timelines, data management and analysis plans, and financial administration; provides guidance and oversight to research team members; and serves as the project point of contact with faculty, sponsors, and leadership.

  • Oversee and advise on research projects and investigative studies from study initiation to conclusion including study design, data collection and management plans, technical approaches, budget management, and funding opportunities
  • Design project work-flow processes and project infrastructure; delegate, prioritize, and review research tasks in order to achieve project goals and improve results
  • Author, review, and revise procedures for research projects and experiments; direct the standardization of procedures
  • Oversee data collection, data management and reporting methods; interpret and present complex data findings to department executives, external organizations, sponsors, and the larger research community
  • Research, evaluate, and advise University investigators and administrators on research methodologies, emerging trends, novel solutions, new technologies, and other resources
  • Interface with external collaborators to direct and facilitate multi-site and collaborative research
  • Provide guidance and oversight of compliance with government regulations and University policies on research; keep abreast of compliance regulations and changes
  • Plan and administer project budgets; serve as liaison with central financial offices including research accounting, payroll, and department financial officers; create financial and statistical reports for Principal Investigators and division/department executives; analyze information and recommend spending activity
  • Author papers, manuscripts, publications; represent department research interests at institutional workshops and meetings
  • Collaborate with unit, department, or center leadership in order to develop strategic partnerships, advance the mission of research initiatives and projects; develop long term plans for resource allocation
  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

 

POSITION SPECIFICS
A full-time Microscopy Imaging Scientist / Core Manager position is available in the Advanced Light Microscopy Core (ALM) at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. ALM supports researchers by providing consultations, training, and assisted sessions on advanced microscopes and image processing/analysis.
Current microscopes include a DeltaVision Elite (widefield), a Leica SP8 STED 3X (confocal/STED), a Leica SP8 FALCON (confocal with FLIM/FCS), and a Miltenyi Biotec UltraMicroscope II (light-sheet for cleared samples). A Nikon CSU-W1 SoRa super-res spinning disk confocal microscope will be purchased soon. Commercial image visualization/analysis/processing software--Imaris and SVI Huygens--are on ALM workstations.
Responsibilities:
- Manages ALM and leads other ALM staff to support and advance research
-  Trains and assists researchers with the execution of advanced imaging experiments (experimental design, how to acquire quantifiable data, image analysis)
-  Ensures microscopes/workstations are in excellent working order
- Supports users with troubleshooting
-  Interacts with vendors for troubleshooting, service contracts, scheduling visits, etc.
-  Responds to researcher inquiries in a timely fashion during working hours
- Organizes teaching and educational events
-  Uses the iLab System for administrative tasks such as scheduling and billing
- Works with faculty members to secure funding for additional instrumentation
- Other related functions as assigned
Minimum qualifications:
- Understanding of optics, light microscopy, and digital images
- Extensive hands-on experience with laser scanning confocal microscopy
- Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy sample preparation methods
- Experience with training others on microscopes and/or bioimage analysis

- Knowledge of best practices for digital image processing
- Proactive, well-organized, and able to work independently and in a team
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English
- Soft skills to work in a customer-facing role
- 2+ years of experience working in a core facility / shared resource environment

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree

Minimum Experience
6+ years of relevant experience

Equivalency
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD in a related field
- Experience with different microscopy modalities (spinning disk, STED, light-sheet)
-  Experience with fluorescence lifetime imaging or fluorescence correlation spectroscopy
-  Experience with bioimage analysis/processing using ImageJ/Fiji and Python
- Experience in developing and/or implementing research methods
- 5+ years of experience working in a core facility / shared resource environment
- NIH S10 grant application experience

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of refunding.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $68,200.00 - $102,300.00.
